Mennos

Picture
Mennonites, or “Mennos,” as they are often called, are an eclectic bunch. In case you’re wondering about Mennonites, look no further. We’ve provided a number of links to useful resources.

NOTE: We've borrowed the language about our beliefs and our history from the "Who We Are" page of the Albuquerque Mennonite Church of New Mexico. We like how they say things!

Mennonites believe:
  • - Jesus is the center of our faith.
  • - Community is the center of our lives.
  • - Reconciliation is the center of our work.
History: Mennonites are heirs of the Anabaptist movement in 16th-century Europe that believed following Jesus (among other things) requires the rejection of a church-state symbiosis, the use of coercion, and governmental and military power systems. It encourages voluntary adult membership, active peacemaking, restorative justice, respect for creation and simplicity. Along with the Friends (Quakers) and the Church of the Brethren, we represent the historic peace church tradition in North America. We are also part of a larger world-wide community of nearly 1.6 million who gather under the umbrella of Mennonite World Conference.

Mennonite Organizations
  • Mountain States Mennonite Conference: Our church is part of an area conference of Mennonite USA. Our conference consists of about 20 congregations in Colorado and New Mexico.
  • Mennonite Church USA: Our congregation is one of about 700 Anabaptist congregations scattered across the United States. God calls on Mennonites to be followers of Jesus Christ and grow as communities of grace, joy and peace. God’s healing and hope flow through us to the world.
  • Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS): Mennonite Disaster Service is a volunteer network of Anabaptist churches that responds in Christian love to those affected by disasters in Canada and the United States. While the main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes, this service touches lives and nurtures hope, faith and wholeness.
  • Mennonite Education Agency (MEA): The hope of this agency is that people touched by MEA-affiliated schools, institutions and programs will grow intellectually, spiritually and strengthen the life, witness and identity of Mennonite Church USA.
  •  Mennonite Mission Network (MMN): exists to lead, mobilize and equip the church to participate in holistic witness to Jesus Christ in a broken world.  We envision every congregation and all parts of the church being fully engaged in mission—across the street, all through the marketplaces and around the world.
  • Mennonite Central Committee (MCC): is a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God’s love and compassion for all through relief, development and peace.

Mennonite Resources
  • Anabaptist World: is an independent journalistic ministry serving the global Anabaptist movement. We seek to inform, inspire and provide a forum where Mennonites and anyone interested in Anabaptism can explore faith and culture.
  • The Mennonite Quarterly Review: is a quarterly journal devoted to Anabaptist-Mennonite history, thought, life and affairs.
  • Goshen College: is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA, an historic Anabaptist peace church.
