Fall Community Forum:
Mennonites—An Alternative to War
Friday evening, October 29. This is the final event of our 35th Anniversary celebration. We will hold a community forum that highlights examples of how Mennonites work to promote peace and reconciliation around the world.
6:00 - 7:00 pm: Daily Terror Display. This eye-opening 16-panel exhibit, created by the Mennonite Central
Committee, has traveled the globe. It features photos and stories from Laos,
Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon about the tragic loss of human life caused by
cluster bombs, so many years after wars have ended.
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. dropped 260 cluster bomb canisters on Laos. Each canister contained hundreds of "bomblets," the size of billard balls. Many unexploded bomblets continue
to kill and maim many people in rural Laos. For details, visit: Cluster Bombs and Cluster Bombs Display Exhibit
7:00 - 8:30 pm: Traveling Peace Academy.Herm Weaver, Mountain States Mennonite Conference Minister,
international peace educator, and singer/songwriter, will share his work with
such organizations as the Religions Initiative (URI) and the Traveling Peace
Academy. His presentation will focus on the work that URI has done,
transforming religious tension into positive social change through local
grassroots interfaith communities around the world.
Also present will be Bill Timpson, CSU Professor
of Education. Timpson is the author of Teaching and Learning Peace, and From
Battleground to Common Ground: Stories of Conflict, Reconciliation and Civic
Renewal. Local peace activists from Strength Though Peace and members of
Christian Peacemaker Teams will respond to the presentation. A discussion with
the audience will follow.
